Duct sealing can help resolve many common problems in homes across the Walnut Creek and Concord areas and make them feel more comfortable. So why isn’t it done more often?
Duct Sealing is Not Glamourous
Sealing duct systems of residential heating and cooling systems is a job without glamour. It involves work in cramped and often unpleasant spaces like attics and crawlspaces. Though the results of comfort and efficiency are often dramatic, duct sealing is a job most HVAC companies do not want to do and few do well.
Poor Installation is One Culprit
When we inspect ductwork, we often find that duct systems were not properly installed in the first place. Unfortunately like many home systems, the advance of time usually does not improve, but may further degrade a poorly installed system.
How Much Leakage?
Leaking ductwork is commonly found when a BPP technician conducts an energy audit. We typically see more than 30% leakage—sometimes more than 90%! When air is drawn into a leaky duct system, that air is usually from the crawlspace or the attic. Ironically, these areas that are adjacent to our living space are two of our least healthy and least comfortable environments. We often see rodents, mold, and other contaminants in attics and crawlspaces. Unfortunately, that is the air that is entering a leaky duct system. It can be a queasy feeling just thinking about breathing that air!
Duct Sealing to Improve Indoor Air Quality
Health, comfort, safety and wasted money are all issues related to duct leakage. Be sure duct leakage is identified, corrected and verified in any improvement project in your home.
