Air conditioner problems generally need professional attention, but some issues can be resolved with good troubleshooting skills. If your AC is acting up, use these tips from BPP to safely get it fixed on your own in no time.
Check the Thermostat
Many heating and cooling problems stem from incorrect thermostat settings. When the thermostat is set too high, the condenser may not work, the cooling might be insufficient or no cold air may come out at all. Fortunately, you can usually resolve most of these issues and rule out other potential causes by lowering your thermostat setting by 5°F. If nothing happens, the thermostat might not be the problem, which means you should call a qualified technician for further investigation.
Remove Any Register Blockage
Knowing your AC is running full blast but not feeling any cold air isn’t that mysterious of an issue. Something might be blocking your registers that’s restricting the airflow. Any experienced AC repair professional would advise you to check each of them and ensure that none of is being blocked by furniture.
Clean the Evaporator
When an AC system doesn’t blow enough cool air or turns on and off by itself, a dirty evaporator is one of the usual suspects. Removing the filth from this component should restore your cooling equipment to it’s normal operation. But if you have no clue how to do it, it would be better to leave the job to someone knowledgeable to avoid inadvertently damaging something.
Make Sure Nothing Is Wrong With the Condenser
Any AC and ventilation repair specialist knows that blockage of the outdoor condenser unit can be a cause of short cycling. If your air conditioner’s cooling cycle lasts much less than 20 minutes and its condenser is surrounded by greenery, overgrowth is the likely culprit. Cut back any weeds and plants crowding the unit to let it breathe. If none of the above troubleshooting tips did the trick, let BPP get to the bottom of the problem.
